The Key to a Safe Workplace? Testing!

We work with clients of all sizes to create and implement affordable and practical COVID-19 testing programs. A well-designed program incorporates: 1) baseline testing (test all employees in a condensed period to evaluate for presence of infection); 2) ongoing surveillance testing (testing a small percentage of employees each week to monitor for potential outbreaks); and, 3) surge testing (testing all employees during outbreaks to monitor for spread). Mobile-Med has tested hundreds of thousands of public and private sector employees, and our COVID monitoring program is one of the most prolific in the western United States. Our programs are designed around a science-based approach, aimed at controlling and preventing the spread of disease, and ensuring a healthy workplace!

This week, the directors of the National Institute of Health released a shared statement indicating the importance of a testing-based approach to COVID prevention. Among the reasons that testing is strongly recommended is because of the potential for asymptomatic spreaders of COVID--meaning people who are infected and contagious with COVID but who do not show any outward symptoms.

"Since it is recognized that nearly half of all SARS-CoV-2 infections are transmitted by people who are not showing any symptoms, identifying infected individuals while they are presymptomatic, as well as those who are asymptomatic, will play a major role in stopping the pandemic." - National Institute of Health

With the potential for people to spread COVID infection even when they are not showing symptoms, the only way to ensure a safe workplace is through a program of social distancing, use of masks and barriers, and a comprehensive testing program.

"Testing can help people determine if they are infected with SARS-CoV-2 — regardless of whether they have symptoms — and whether they are at risk of spreading the infection to others. Taking measures to prevent the spread of infection will be the most effective strategy for getting us safely back to work and school." - National Institute of Health

With the news that some major COVID vaccine trials are currently paused based on a potential adverse health reaction, and with the recent pledge by vaccine manufacturers to delay production of COVID vaccines until additional safety testing is undertaken and Phase 3 trials are successfully completed, managing the spread of the disease in our workplaces will remain a critical issue for months to come.
